Ronald Means

Beloved family man and respected Austin businessman, Ronald Lewis Means transitioned to everlasting peace Friday, November 22 in Austin, Texas. Ron was a lifelong resident of East Austin where he attended Reagan High School and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and History from Huston Tillotson College, now University.

Born May 9, 1953, Ron was the youngest of five children born to educators and civil rights activists, Drs. James H. Means, Sr. and Bertha S. Means. His father was a distinguished professor of math and his mother was a Trustee at Huston Tillotson University.

Through his long association with Huston Tillotson, Ron had the good fortune to meet his future, lovely bride Diane Wright, which resulted in a loving union of 38 years. Together they built their family and life filled with love, trust and shared dreams. Their union was blessed with a beloved daughter, Jasmine, who brought them immeasurable joy. In 2021, Ronald was blessed with his only grandchild, Ronald Earl, who was the love of his life. In his final days, Ron spent time planning his grandson’s third birthday party.

Ronald grew up in a home filled with deeply rooted Christian values and a commitment to community. His parents were instrumental in shaping his moral compass, teaching him the importance of faith, generosity, and service to others. As a child, he witnessed their dedication to building inclusive spaces, such as their work with St. James Episcopal Church, one of Austin’s first integrated congregations. These lessons profoundly influenced Ronald’s character, instilling in him a firm moral foundation, a charitable spirit, and a lifelong dedication to education and helping others. These values shaped him into being a well-rounded gentleman known for his kindness, resilience, and sense of purpose.

From a young age he possessed an entrepreneurial spirit. His resourcefulness emerged early beginning with a neighborhood lawn business while in elementary school, followed by selling programs at UT football games with his big brother, James. In 1965, at the age of twelve he began his first formal job as an usher at the Varsity theatre on the Drag, earning 85 cents an hour. These early experiences built the foundation for a lifetime of creativity, hard work and determination.

During the course of his life he pursued a career in law enforcement, serving in several agencies including the Travis County Constables’ office and the IRS criminal investigation division. His time in law enforcement highlighted his dedication to public service and his ability to lead with integrity.

Always an entrepreneur, Ron joined his parents and brother, James H., Jr., in acquiring Harlem Cab, later Austin Cab, along with his several other transit services. The business became a source of pride and a legacy providing employment for hundreds of Austin residents.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents Drs. James and Bertha Means, eldest sister Joan Means Khabele (Paseka), and her son Letsie Khabele. He is survived by his wife Diane Wright Means, daughter Jasmine Means, grandson Ronald Earl Means, brother James H. Means (Carol), sisters Janet Scott (Samuel), Patricia King (Marvin), sister-in-law Patricia Ann Jenkins (Don), and brother-in-law Michael Wright (La Shaun). He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces and nephews. And his beloved cocker spaniel, Lucky Earl Means.

He was a car enthusiast and a diehard fan of The University of Texas football. Ron’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith, entrepreneurial spirit, and dedication to family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance and service to others. His presence in this world touched countless lives. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

Monetary gifts may be made to St. James Episcopal Church. Ron was an organ donor who brought the gift of life to his recipient.
